What is happiness?

When asked a seemingly simple question “Are you happy?”, I turn inward and begin my thought process with a more fundamental question: “What is happiness?”.

My current answer has taken me years to come to and is still a work in progress.

Happiness is the absence of dissatisfaction.

Sounds simple? Well, it is. Happiness is a basic state of all human beings. In other words there is no need to seek happiness, but rather seek to eliminate that which creates dissatisfaction. Once eliminated, happiness will be discovered as a preexisting condition.

Truly happy people may actually be puzzled by the earlier question “Are you happy?”. The simple reason is that they have never reached happiness as a goal. They did not work for it and therefore are not aware that they have arrived. They simply are… happy. :)
