It was the most epic trip my son Lucas and I have made.
54 hours in the air.
7000 km driven.
It started out in Japan, where we spent the first 20 days. We visited a few cities, namely Tokyo, Sapporo, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Hiroshima and Osaka.
We used trains, including bullet trains, to get around. We bought a 3 weeks all inclusive pass. It was an excellent thing to do. It can only be bought while outside the country. Trains are pricey in Japan and we saved a lot of money even though we paid close to $1600 for two of us.
We were supposed to go to Australia and New Zealand afterwards. While in Japan I discovered that local flights in Asia are reasonably priced and since we did not buy any tickets ahead of time, we decided to take a detour.
The detour included Seoul (South Korea), Hong Kong (China), Bangkok (Thailand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Singapore, Jakarta (Indonesia), Bali (Indonesia). After all that we finally flew to Sydney (Australia). Some of the local flights were ridiculously cheap, with the cheapest one being about $50 for two of us.
My son was getting more into video and decided to put one together. It took him nearly full year to create the final video. Take a look...
